100 Mind-Blowing Marine Facts

There’s a plankton that reverses your feeling of hot and cold. Dinoflagellates are marine plankton that can alter as well as hallucinations. These trippy symptoms can last from weeks up to years.

The oceans contain 200,000 different kinds of viruses. Dive deep into this next fun fact: Marine viruses have been found in the ocean from the surface down to 4,000m deep and from the North to the South Pole. Most of these viruses are harmless to humans. However, they can infect marine life such as whales and crustaceans.

The majority of plant life is located in the ocean. There are around a total of 228, 450 known species in the ocean and around 2 million more species are left undiscovered. Most of the plants found in the ocean are kelp, seaweed, seagrass, and algae. Marine plants are divided into 3 categories, euphotic/sunlit, dispothic/twilight, and aphotic/midnight.

The largest land animal in Antarctica is an insect: the columbola (which looks like an earwig). Penguins are considered marine animals.

Coral reefs are Earth’s largest living structure. Coral reefs are not only beautiful natural wonders but also the largest living structure on Earth. These underwater ecosystems are made up of colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps, which build calcium carbonate skeletons that accumulate over time and form the complex structures we know as coral reefs. Coral reefs are incredibly diverse and play a vital role in the ocean ecosystem, providing habitat and protection for many species, and acting as a natural barrier that helps to protect coastlines from storms and erosion. Unfortunately, coral reefs are under threat from a range of environmental factors, including ocean acidification, rising temperatures and global warming. ESA research has shown how our ocean waters have become more acidic over the last three decades and how this is having a detrimental effect on marine life. By using satellite technology to measure ocean colour, temperature and salinity, scientists can track changes in ocean chemistry and detect areas where acidification is occurring. Rising temperatures can also have a direct impact on coral reefs, causing coral bleaching, which occurs when corals expel the algae that live in their tissues and provide them with food. Coral bleaching can lead to the death of the coral, which can have knock-on effects on the wider ecosystem.

KILLER WHALES ARE DOLPHINS. Orcas, also known as “killer whales”, are the largest members of the dolphin family. They are one of the ocean’s top predators, preying on a diverse range of marine species, which include many fish species, penguins, seabirds, sea turtles, cephalopods and marine mammals such as seals and even whales larger than themselves.

As many as 80% of Hong Kong’s toilets are flushed with seawater. In the 1950s, Hong Kong found the perfect solution to an overall lack of freshwater and installed a separate water distribution and waste-water management system. This system has since been installed in many coastal communities such as the Marshall Islands. Not only does it save precious drinking water, but it’s also even been found to be better for marine ecosystems!

There is a group of wolves in British Columbia called sea wolves with a 90% marine diet.
